I pledged my allegiance in the summer of '92
"Mekka & The Soul Brother" sealed the deal
Before that I was a casual listener
but I kept my guard up
cause it didn't seem real
I always knew I would be a musician
At age 6 I knew all the words to Elton John
I played air guitar like Eddie Van Halen
though I couldn't get my hair cut like David Lee Roth
I stayed up late just for friday night videos
back when videos were cool
no matter what the song
And I'd vote for the top 10 on AM radio
which hardly ever changed so you could always sing along
And my mom, dad and I could agree
on a record to play on a road-trip
but that would change
I was down with Doobie Brothers and Haulin' Oats
Duran Duran, Michael Jackson and a host of other names
But along came guys like Bryan Adams
And the audience got older so things got soft
After the invention of the power ballad
it was time for this teen
to turn his radio off
So I rode to the skatepark in silence
til' one day
Arkae had the words "Dead Kennedys" on his grip tape
When I inquired he said I wouldn't like it
but instead they remain one of my favorite bands to this day
And I was welcomed to a world I never knew
most of these bands were beyond obscure
They had to make their recordings for themselves
so it sounded kind of rough but the music was pure
But nothing stays the same forever
And punk became alternative
and audiences grew
And I went from Descendants to Smashing Pumpkins
but by the second lollapolooza had to find something new
I gotta find something new man
So if you like punk rock then you knew Public Enemy
and of course De La Soul and the Beastie Boys
But I mostly thought rap was a kind of commercial
that was used to sell chicken and children's toys
We used to dance to Dinosaur Jr.
and when Hammer came on
we would head out to the hallway
But after Meka and the soul brother hit me
it was all rap, only rap, just rap all day
I had to get everything in my collection
so Pipi and Hunnicutt gave me dubs
Never enough just to being the critic
so making beats and writing rhymes became my love
We started Farm Fresh and played with anybody
punk rock, hip hop, folk and country
We thought we could sign to a major label
so we played for A&R's but we came up empty
I kept it low key while I got my degree
and never thought of doing it seriously
And I worked full time in a shirt and tie
and on the side made a record called the Ethics EP
It was fun but also a business
which started to require more and more time
In 01 we released 5 albums
and soon I was no longer on the corporate dime
Being self employed is a dream come truh
where every day of freedom seems better than the next
But I'm starting to believe that
I'm starting to forget that hip-hop is more
than just cashing cheques
But I want to stay the fan
I get every new realese
But it's starting to move me less and less
And when I'm working on the books
I'll listen to classic rock
and look at this art form
and wonder whats next
I gotta find something new man
Hip Hop has taught me so much about music
Without it I would not be a fan of Al Green
And I truly believe in the music my friends make
I've accepted that we'll never be part of the mainstream
I'm grateful that I'm able
to put food on the table
and I'm glad I've found an audience for me
to maintain
But I want that feeling from Meka and the soul brother
wonder

"Mekka & The Soul Brother" besiegelten die Sache
Davor war ich ein gelegentlicher Musikhörer
aber ich hielt meine Deckung oben
denn es fühlte sich nicht echt an
Ich wusste immer, dass ich mal ein Musiker sein würde
Mit 6 Jahren kannte ich alle Texte von Elton John
Ich spielte die Luftgitarre wie Eddie Van Halen
auch wenn ich mir David Lee Roth's Frisur nicht zulegen konnte
Ich blieb für die Freitag Nacht Musikvideos lang auf
damals, als die Videos noch cool waren
egal zu welchem Lied
Und ich stimmte für die Top 10 des AM-Kanals
welche sich fast nie veränderten, daher konnte man immer mitsingen
Und Mom, Dad und ich konnten uns darüber einigen
welche Platte bei einem Ausflug gespielt werden würde
aber das sollte sich ändern
Ich stand auf die Doobie Brothers und Haulin' Oats
Duran Duran, Michael Jackson und eine ganze Menge mehr
Aber es tauchten Typen wie Bryan Adams auf
und das Publikum wurde älter und die Musik weicher
Nach der Erfindung der Power-Ballade
war es für diesen Teenager an der Zeit
das Radio auszuschalten
Also fuhr ich in Stille zum Skatepark
Bis zu dem Tag
als Arkae "Dead Kennedys" auf seinem Skateboard stehen hatte
Als ich nachfragte, sagte er, mir wird das nicht gefallen
aber stattdessen sind sie noch heute eine meiner Lieblingsgruppen
Und ich wurde in einer Welt begrüßt, die ich nicht kannte
Die meisten dieser Bands waren mehr als obskur
Sie mussten ihre Aufnahmen selbst herstellen
darum klang es ziemlich rauh aber die Musik war pur
Aber nichts bleibt für immer
und so wurde aus Punkmusik Alternative
und das Publikum wuchs
Ich mochte erst die Descendants, dann die Smashing Pumpkins
aber beim 2. Lollapolooza-Festival musste ich etwas neues finden
Ich muss etwas neues finden, Mann
Wenn du Punkrock magst, kanntest du Public Enemy
und natürlich De La Soul und die Beastie Boys
Aber ich dachte, Rap sei überwiegend ein Werbemittel
mit dem Hühnchen und Spielzeug verkauft werden sollte
Wir tanzten zu Dinosaur Jr.
und als Hammer im TV war
gingen wir raus in den Hausflur
Aber nachdem ich die "Mekka & The Soul Brother"-Scheibe hörte
Gab es nur noch Rap, einzig Rap, ausschließlich Rap, den ganzen Tag
Ich brauchte jeden Titel in meiner Sammlung
also machten mir Pip Skid und DJ Hunnicutt Kopien
Mir reichte es nie, nur der Kritiker zu sein
daher wurde das Beatbasteln und Texte schreiben meine Liebe
Wir gründeten Farm Fresh und machten mit jedem Musik
Punkrock, Hip Hop, Folk und Country
Wir dachten, wir können bei einem Major-Label gesigned werden
also spielten wir für A&R's aber es wurde nichts daraus
Ich ließ es ruhig angehen, während ich meinen Abschluss machte
und ich dachte nie daran, ernsthaft Musik zu machen
Und ich arbeitete Vollzeit in Hemd und Krawatte
und nebenbei nahm ich eine Platte auf, die Ethics EP
Es machte Spaß, war aber auch ein Geschäft
welches mehr und mehr Zeit in Anspruch nahm
2001 veröffentlichten wir 5 Alben
und schon bald gehörten Firmenspesen der Vergangenheit an
Selbständig zu sein ist ein wahrgewordener Traum
bei dem jeder freie Tag besser zu sein scheint als der Nächste
Aber ich fange an zu glauben
dass ich anfange zu vergessen, dass Hip Hop mehr ist
als nur Schecks einlösen
Aber ich will ein Fan bleiben
Ich hol mir alle neuen Veröffentlichungen
Aber es fängt an, mich immer weniger mitzureissen
Und wenn ich über den Geschäftsbüchern sitze
höre ich Classic Rock
und schaue mir diese Kunstrichtung an
und frage mich, was als nächstes kommt
Ich muss etwas neues finden, Mann
Hip Hop hat mir soviel über Musik beigebracht
Ohne diese Musik wäre ich kein Fan von Al Green
Und ich glaube ernsthaft an die Musik, die meine Freunde machen
Ich habe akzeptiert, dass wir nie zum Mainstream gehören werden
Ich bin dankbar dafür, dass ich fähig dazu bin
für das Essen auf dem Tisch zu sorgen
Und ich bin froh, dass ich ein Publikum gefunden habe
was ich aufrechterhalten kann
Aber ich will wieder dieses Gefühl von "Mekka & The Soul Brother"
und frage mich
"Werde ich dieses Gefühl jemals wieder spüren?"
